Australia In The Vietnam War :: essays research papers

The main opportunity Australia has gone under direct assault from another nation, was when Japan besieged Darwin and sunk various boats in Sydney, during World War 2. The inquiry at that point must be posed, why Australia has been engaged with such a large number of contentions. Various late clashes in this century ring a bell, they incorporate, The Boer War, World War One, World War Two and The Vietnam War. By a wide margin the contention that drew the most shock from Australian residents was the Vietnam War. Australia has been brought into these contentions through various settlements and unions made with different nations. Frequently it isn't the contentions that have drawn most shock from Australian residents, rather the request of different nations, for Australia to acknowledge huge quantities of post-war outcasts. The presentation of induction into Australia during the Vietnam War, caused a lot of shock in the Australian open. Vietnam was the primary war ever to be appropriately broadcast, the open saw just because the genuine ruthlessness of war. The general population began to address Australia’s contribution in the war. Bans were held around Australia in challenge enrollment and Australia’s contribution in the war. A significant part of the fighting was finished by understudies and the more youthful ages, there was still help for the war exertion. This was reflected in the November 1966 decisions, when there was an avalanche triumph for the Liberals. Enrollment had an impact on the Liberal governments fame, a couple of months after a total troop withdrawal in 1972 from Vietnam, the Whitlam Labor government supplanted the McMahon Liberal government. Truly, one of the impacting variables of the Liberal’s political race misfortune was the Governments decision to e ngage in a war that had little to do with Australia. Australia’s association in Vietnam came to fruition because of the South-East Asia Treaty Organisation(SEATO). Australia was a nation engaged with SEATO. After Americas demand, South Vietnam mentioned Australia’s help in the Vietnam Conflict. Australia’s association in this association was a significant one, in the event that South-East Asia tumbled to socialism, at that point it’s northern shores would be helpless. Having said this, Australia’s inclusion in this contention was not only therefore. Political aspiration was a significant contributing component in Australia’s inclusion. All things considered, it was an opportunity to help one of the most remarkable nations on the planet out, and this would fortify Australia’s political partnerships with America.

The Social Norms Essay Example for Free

The Social Norms Essay I decided to break the social standard in a lift as my test. I picked this with the goal that I could really join two social standards into one. I decided to stand in reverse in the lift and when there were various individuals in the lift, yet I figured it would be all the more fascinating on the off potential for success that I had exceptionally near the individual as opposed to confronting in reverse when there was only one individual in the lift. The autonomous factors in my test were sexual orientation of the individual that I stood near, the measure of time we had together in the lift, and of coarse the quantity of individuals in the lift and what number of stops were made. I started to quantify the manner in which individuals responded to when I attacked their space in a lift, which was almost vacant. I additionally estimated what might happen when an individual would be simply jumping on and my back would be towards them. My theory was that the individuals that I stood near would really move since they had space to, and could really ask me what I was doing. My different speculation is that nobody would respond to my confronting the other way however they would gaze and gaze hard. At the point when the lift entryways opened and I saw that just a single individual was on the lift strolled directly in with a sudden advance. Generally the individual was on either the correct side or the left and never truly in the center. I at that point continued to hit a story number only higher than theirs and stand straightforwardly close to them, however the entire while keeping quiet. To nothing unexpected the individuals got awkward and attempted to in an unobvious manner move away. They would in general glance at me extremely irritated and some would entirely dismiss me. The greater part of the individuals that were impolite were ladies about a similar age as I seemed to be. I believe that they may have felt that I was taunting them here and there. Presently when I confronted in reverse in the lift individuals appeared not to make a lot of motions or development. They in spite of the fact that did gaze and marvel what I was doing like my theory expressed however they never truly did a lot. It wasnt until individuals started to jump on while I was at that point in the retrogressive position did it happen. The ones jumping on the lift avoided my territory in any event, when the opposite side was packed, they would in general single me out from the rest and ensure that I was not close to them. Later in the trial a man said to me, are you doing that for a test, and of coarse I said yes and concluded that it was the ideal opportunity for me to end my experimentation. I was really ready to acknowledge my speculation, in spite of the fact that it was to some degree a simple theory to produce. I figure it might have been somewhat unique if the earth I was in was not nearby. The genuine size of the lift constrained my outcomes and the w ay that I was doing the experimentation in the PLC restricted what sort of individuals I must be with. If I somehow managed to do the analysis again I would go to a lodging where there are a wide range of various individuals.

Application of Microeconomic Concepts in Personal Life

Use of Microeconomic Concepts in Personal Life Microeconomics includes watching the conduct of an economy to see how to appropriate assets. This investigation is significant in business world since it impacts gracefully and request of merchandise and ventures, which are utilized to set the expense of items and administrations. The two purchasers and venders utilize the two components to settle on money related choices. This paper will concentrate on how microeconomics ideas are applied in life.Advertising We will compose a custom article test on Application of Microeconomic Concepts in Personal Life explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More Supply and request are seen to be the most powerful factors concerning the expense of products and ventures. This implies if the interest of a given ware is high and the gracefully of that product isn't satisfactory to meet the market needs, at that point the expense of that thing will rise. This can be more awful if there is just one sole provider since he/she will be overpowered by the expansion sought after. This may make the provider acquire merchandise of low quality the market and the dealers will exchange them off at the standard costs. This happens in light of the fact that the producer creates the items in a rush. A savvy customer ought not be battled with what he/she finds in a single shop, however ought to rather search for different spots where a similar ware is being sold at sponsored cost. Rivalry among venders favors purchasers in light of the fact that every one of them attempts to tempt the client by cutting their costs without lessening the nature of the product marked down. What's more, one should be mindful when making a buy and the lack of gracefully ought not be the issue. There are individuals who are known to pass judgment on the nature of a thing by its sticker price. This isn't right since venders are out to make benefits and to them the genuine worth of a thing isn't an issue. It is in this way critical to assess a thing since it c hooses whether it merits the expense. Many are times when the cost of a thing misleads somebody, possibly to lament later when for reasons unknown, the thing isn't as sturdy as we were made to accept. In addition, one can't recognize a couple of shoes that was purchased at $20 from the one that cost the proprietor $50.This is on the grounds that they fill a similar need. The above situation infers that when the cost of things that we require the most goes up we should recognize elective things to fill a similar need. This is on the grounds that there is no point of purchasing a costly thing when there are other modest things that can extinguish our necessities. In any case, it relies upon the budgetary status of a person. Another choice is hold up until the gracefully returns to typical. This is important particularly when the things being referred to are not required that much, implying that the necessities can wait.Advertising Looking for paper on business financial matters? To the purchaser preparing assists with forestalling buying things at significant expenses. For example, when schools close a parent should buy the things that his/her kid requires in the accompanying season in light of the fact that around then the interest for books and other learning materials would be low. Nonetheless, if the parent picks to hold up until when the schools are reviving, he/she would pay more for a thing that would have cost him/her less cash on the off chance that he/she had made the buy before. Then again, a keen merchant watches the market conduct and comprehends when the low and high season initiates and gets ready satisfactorily. By being educated about changing business sector inclines a vender gets enough stock and lies in trust that the interest will shoot up and make his/her score. In microeconomics, i t is the sharpest individuals who keep on flourishing in any event, when conditions keep on decaying. Microeconomics can likewise be utilized when one expects to build up a business by assessing gracefully and request. By watching the earth, it is anything but difficult to recognize an open door that is yet to be abused. This includes recognizing the necessities of the individuals around you to figure out what things you can offer to them. Going indiscriminately will make a respectable thought come up short. A few people need to wander into organizations that have been attempted by others just on the grounds that they know a couple of individuals who get gigantic comes back from selling specific product. Because John got his riches by selling bananas by the side of the road doesn't imply that someone else will similarly prevail in a similar endeavor. It is thusly critical to contemplate the market first to recognize potential clients. The equivalent goes for individuals who wish to acquire cash from monetary establishments. This is on the grounds that it isn't hard to get the cash, yet the premiums that will amass. Truth be told, the vast majority dread to obtain cash on account of these premiums. At the point when one wishes to apply for an advance, he/she should initially dissect how the cash will be reimbursed. This involves completing examination on how interests have been changing previously. This is on the grounds that the adjustments in interests could support borrowers and negatively affect loan specialists. This infers if the financing costs descended while you have just gotten cash from the loaning party then you will pay less cash than the expressed amount.Advertising We will compose a custom paper test on Application of Microeconomic Concepts in Personal Life explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More In such a case, the borrower should exploit the circumstance to reimburse the advance while the rates are still low. On the off chance th at the borrower dithers, the rates could increment and along these lines, the sum to be reimbursed will increment. Then again, the borrower can apply for a credit that has a perpetual loan fee since that way he/she would be advised from the adjustments in interests. In any case, on the off chance that one needs to obtain cash when the financing costs are still high it would be fitting not to apply for an advance in such a circumstance. Changes in financing costs likewise impact interests in bonds and offers. A financial specialist can buy securities when it is guessed that the loan costs will go up later on. This is on the grounds that the profits he/she will get from those securities will be a lot more noteworthy than when the loan costs stayed low. In the financial exchange, it is conceivable to make benefits when the premiums are low .In such a case, a speculator buys stocks when the costs are still low and sells them when the costs acknowledge most likely because of increment in loan fees. Also, microeconomics can be utilized in business the board to direct when an individual ought to enter or leave an endeavor. This is in such a case that a business isn't bringing any benefits there is no point of working it since it will keep on drawing cash from the financial specialist as opposed to producing salary. This is basic during downturn periods. A person who is utilized should utilize the information he/she has in microeconomics to haggle for compensation increment. The decrease in the estimation of a nearby money gives a chance to a representative to interest for wage increase in light of the fact that the compensation that was once enough to meet his/her needs is not, at this point valuable. A concerned boss would comprehend this rationale much better. On the off chance that the business will not tune in to such contentions, at that point the representative should search for another activity that pays more while as yet working for the ebb and flow boss. In the event that the circumstance perseveres, the representative ought to distinguish methods for enduring the expansion. A portion of the methodologies incorporate dispensing with some superfluous costs, for example, extravagances. On the other hand, when swelling diminishes the individuals who are not utilized should expand the recurrence of looking for work since openings for work increments with decrease in expansion. At the point when expansion expands, the students who move on from learning foundations should search for methods for utilizing themselves in light of the fact that the activity market will decay and bosses will terminate as opposed to recruiting employees.Advertising Searching for exposition on business financial matters? How about we check whether we can support you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Find out More For people who take part in global exchange, finding out about changes in different economies would help them up their game. This is monetary air pockets that are knowledgeable about one nation are reached out to different nations that communicate with it. For example, if the estimation of the US dollar rose against the estimation of Japanese yen then the individuals who import merchandise from US would bring about more expenses. Then again, trades from Japan would be modest to the Americans. In the above expressed case, it would be intelligent for a Japanese to put resources into the US since he/she will gain returns in US dollars and he/she will get more benefit when the cash is changed over to Japanese yen. Despite what might be expected, it would be imprudent for Americans to put straightforwardly in Japan on the grounds that their ventures won't return any benefit attributable to the low estimation of the yen against the dollar. Taking everything into account, people should set out to apply the standards of microeconomics since it is at exactly that point that they can settle on shrewd choices. Microeconomics isn't simply learned for breezing through tests, but since we need its understanding in our everyday lives. This suggests customers, merchants, and people in general should settle on choices that depend on what they know. On the off chance that we as a whole applied this information properly, nobody would be punished for neglecting to pay his/her obligations in great time. Besides, information in microeconomics builds our bartering power as found on account of representatives and their mission for improving compensation.

Projects Before Php Fog Essay - 783 Words

Projects Before PHP Fog When I started PHP Fog, I did none of the steps that I would recommend now. Most of the time, I didn’t use a bank account or think about ideal customers. I just had an idea that I thought was a good idea, and as a programmer, I started building the idea. I didn t validate if it was a good idea. I thought, I want that, so it must be something people want, or I think that s clever, so I think I ll build it, and other people will sign up for it. I would spend weeks or months doing this on the side as my night project. I would work on programming a project for a few weeks, and ninety percent of the time, I would get bored and give up on it. Ten percent of the time, I would finish a project, launch it, and nobody would sign up. Then I would give up on it. I did that for many years. Finding a problem The first time I did anything different was with PHP Fog. There was a cool platform called Heroku, which was a service for developers to build apps easier. I started moving my own applications to Heroku, which used applications programmed in Ruby on Rails. I had lots of Ruby applications, so I said to myself, I m moving all of my stuff to Heroku, this is great!† Unfortunately, I also had PHP applications. At the time, Heroku didn t use PHP applications, only Ruby. So then I said, Here s a problem: I want to move everything to Heroku, but I can t because I have PHP applications. A light bulb went off in my head. Okay, PHP Fog, I said. Topic 3 Alternatives to in-house advancement: This segment discusses about the presence of application technique for application improvement rather than the in-house advancement strategy. A mobile application must be modified and created before starting with the business exercises. This includes contracting program designers or making an in-house application (Shiraz et al. 2013). The temporary workers make up the advancement and alternate highlights for making a completely utilitarian application for joining. In any case, the contractual workers are not generally subjected to the arrangements of a business and this may prompt issues. Likewise, counterfeit organizations can trap individuals into contributing for administrations and vanish with their cash. Invention Of The Elevator Essays - Elevators, Skyscraper, Down

Invention of the Elevator Back in the days of the 1850's through 1900's the invention of the elevator was a big step for civilization. The people went from old fashion stairs to for them a minute ride of luxury and realization (opposed to climbing stairs). An American inventor named Elisha Graves Otis was the first person to invent the mechanical elevator with adequate safety devices, such as safety brakes which gripped on to the elevator cab's rails. Safey cables which looped around a drum that was attached to the driving motor. These cables were made out of heavy steel instead of rope that would wear and tear within a couple of weeks or maybe possibly a month. While on the other hand steel cables could last for a couple of years. Otis showed off his invention for the first time ar the Crystal Palace Exposition in New York City in 1854. People were estatic about the safety issue of the clamping arrangement that gripped the guide rails on which the elevator car moved when tension was released from the hoist cable. Which meant that if by chance the hoist cable ever snapped, clamps would grip the rails to keep the elevator cab from dropping and smashing at the bottom of the elevator shaft. Most of the United States civilization started to like elevators. Now that they were safer, people decided that elevators would take less time and less stress then taking the stairs. The first elevator was steam powered. It wasn't until later on when elevators had and electric motor. A New York department store called Haughwout Department store made the news and history books in 1957 because they were the first one to have a passenger elevator, driven by steam power installed. The store was five stories high. Hundreds even thousands went into Haughwout a day to see and try out the new elevator. Soon after Haughwout installed their elevator other businesses and apartment buildnings started putting them in. Now that elevators are here cities could grow. Let me tell you why, because in the cities before elevators came about apartment buildings and stores were no more than five stories high and for a valid reason. No one would rent an apartment on the tenth floor if they had to take the stairs. So once the elevators came around buildings began to grow up. Think about it we wouldn't have skyscrapers because again on one would want to climb that many stairs. No skyscrapers would put a burden on the country. I think because a lot of people make their living by building and designing skyscrapers. That's thousands of people who would be working other jobs they didn't want to or they would be unemployed. In 1889 another big building in New York City made the record and history books being the first building to install an electrically driven passenger elevator. This building was the Demarst Building. This elevator had an electric motor to drive a winding drum in the building's basement. You held a lever turning it on and you stopped at the floor you wanted to. It wasn't until 1894 when the push button control panel was introduced. This panel made the elevator very easy to use. All you had to do was walk into the elevator push the button for the floor you wanted to go to and the elevator takes you there. And if by chance the elevator got stuck or there was an emergency there was a button you could ppush so a bell would rind and someone would hear it and call for help. These buttons made the operation of the elevator so easy that even a toddler could work it. Later that year a hoisting aparatus was demonstrated in England. This aparatus applied electric power to a pulley at the top of t he shaft. The weight of the car and counter weights guaranteed traction. This made it possible to move the cable drum to the top of the shaft, leading to higher shafts in taller buildings. For example, the Empire State Building in New York City would have needed this aparatus because at the time this was to be the tallest building in the world. Now you think that all of these elevator

Movie Review a Few Good Men Essays

Movie Review a Few Good Men Essays Movie Review a Few Good Men Paper Movie Review a Few Good Men Paper The movie â€Å"A Few Good Men† was a great story of a young attorney who was in the Navy, called to defend some Marines who were suspected of murdering a fellow Marine. During the investigation, it is discovered that the Marines practice something called a â€Å"Code Red†. The code red is an unofficial disciplinary measure, imposed by a marine squad when a member offends against the units esprit de corps. Having been gagged, bound and beaten, the marine dies at his colleagues hands. The argument of the suspects was that it was a direct command that they carry out this code red against a fellow Marine who was not living up to the stringent agenda of the Marine Corp. and they were following the command. Eventually it came out that the person who asked for the code red to be carried out was the Colonel. Jack Nicholson’s character as the Colonel had committed a crime and what he did was unethical in the eyes of both the law and the United States Marine Corps. The question here was whether or not what he did could be proved. A very long and thorough investigation ensued to find out the truth about what happened the night that the Marine died. One of the observations made was that the man who died was suffering from a heart ailment and because of that ailment, it caused his death. It was argued that what was done would not have killed someone normally, but because of his bad heart, he was not able to survive the punishment. Expert witnesses were brought in, including doctors, who testified that a man in his condition should not have endured the physical tests he had. Marines are expected to be a part of a team and each member of that team has a specific responsibility to his or her fellow soldiers. If one member of that team does not live up to his or her responsibilities, the rest of the team will suffer because of it. His squad was suffering and wanted to make him pay. They did not think that the outcome would be death. The characters (who were lawyers) played by Tom Cruise and Demi Moore made a trip to Cuba where the dead soldier had been stationed and wanted to conduct their own investigation. While there, they met with the Colonel in charge of the squad that the dead soldier was a part of. The Colonel (Jessup) played by Jack Nicholson was fully cooperating until he was asked about the code red and some flight records. He got very defensive and angry. When the trial began, he was called to testify by the defense. One other soldier, a Lt. Col. who worked under the Colonel, told the attorneys that the Col. was the one who called the code red. The lawyers knew they would have a hard time getting him to confess and to directly ask him in open court could get them in trouble. They took a chance and after several questions, he was asked if called the code red. He flat out admitted it and the mystery was solved. Unfortunately for the men on trial, they were dishonorably discharged from the Marine Corp. The younger of the two men, Pfc. Downey, did not understand why he was dismissed because he had followed a command from his superior officer, Lance Cpl. Dawson. It basically went through a chain of commands and although Downey did not get the command directly from Col. Jessup, he did not distinguish the difference between his superior officer and that of the Col. The Marines are trained to fight for those weaker than themselves and Dawson and Downey did not fight for the dead Marine. They were the cause of his death. The ethical framework in this movie follows that of utilitarianism. The lawyers in the case were defending the Marines for committing a murder. But because the men were only doing that as a command from their superior officers, it was not necessarily viewed as being a bad thing. Their intention was not to kill a fellow Marine, but to teach him a lesson about teamwork. These soldiers were following an order. In the Marine Corp. if orders are not followed, people can get hurt or killed. There is no question with the Marines about following an order. They must do it. Although what they did was a crime, the argument was that they were following an order and could not say no. And again, they were not intending to kill their fellow soldier. (Virtue Ethics and Leadership) Their order was to tie up the officer, stuff a rag in his mouth, and leave him like that until they felt he had learned his lesson. Upon doing this and along with his heart condition caused his death from something called Lactic Acidosis. (Too much acid in the body due to the buildup of lactic acid in the body). Lactic acidosis occurs when cells make lactic acid from glucose faster than it can be metabolized. The key signs of lactic acidosis include unusually deep and rapid breathing, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Lactic acidosis is a feature of different disorders. It is an important sign of diabetes that is out of control. It is also a rare but dreaded adverse reaction from the drug metformin (Glucophage) for type 2 diabetes. (Definition of Lactic Acidosis) Dawson and Downey were doing what they believed to be a good thing for their squad and thought they would be helping the fellow soldier get more on the ball, so to speak and live up to the high expectations of the Marine Corp. Although the outcome was that the two accused men were not guilty of murder, they were guilty of conduct unbecoming a Marine and were dishonorably discharged. It seems as though the procedure used to help these men in court were somewhat effective, however the outcome was not what they would have chosen for themselves. They did not want to be discharged from the Marines because that is the job they chose to do and wanted to defend their country. To them, the outcome was not justice. These two soldiers wanted everyone to believe, as they did, that they did nothing more than follow a command. The Col. as of course, found guilty as well and would be charged as such, as was Lt. Kendrick who was the officer that gave the order to Lance Cpl. Dawson. In turn, Dawson gave that order to Downey. Downey does not distinguish between the chain of command and therefore, he took it as a direct order from Lt. Kendrick. Perhaps if the focus of the trial was more on Col. Jessup and Lt. Kendrick and th eir roles in the death, Dawson and Downey may not have been discharged. If it had been shown more that Dawson and Downey were simply following a direct command then they may not have had to serve the time they did. If the lawyers had used the teleological view then it is possible the soldiers would be acquitted of all charges. Teleological moral systems are characterized primarily by a focus on the consequences which any action might have. When people make choices which result in the correct consequences, then they are acting morally. If the focus of this movie had been on the morals being just, then the outcome could have been very different. (Deontological, Teleological and Virtue Ethics) The general public love to get inside the mind of attorneys on television because they like to be able to solve crimes and defend those they think to e innocent themselves. In a movie like â€Å"A Few Good Men†, sympathy is given to the accused soldiers and the people watching the movie rooted for them and wanted to see them acquitted. Just watching gave everyone the idea that these men were in fact innocent of the charges they were accused of, even if it was not decided upon in court. Because the vie wers were able to see each side of the case as it was being shown, they were able to make their own decisions. That type of viewing makes movies fun to watch, when people are able to decide for themselves who should be the guilty and not guilty parties. Sadly, not all outcomes of real trials work this way and perhaps in real life these men would have had to serve more time in prison. References Cpt. Praff, C. A. Literary analysis on The turn of the screw by Henry James Essay

Literary analysis on The turn of the screw by Henry James - Essay Example It does not happen to be a ghost story that wrenches the readers’ interest by the inclusion of gross elements like blood curdling episodes and enervating shrieks and action on the part of the ghosts and apparitions. Rather the horror style of Henry James does differ from the other fiction writers in the sense that it happens to be sophisticated and subtle that inculcates the element of horror in the narrative with much finesse and craftsmanship, thereby allowing the readers to exercise their imagination while perusing a work of fiction that is disturbingly open and inconclusive in terms of climax. In The Turn of the Screw Henry James resorts to a combination of the usual elements of a ghost narrative and his unique ability to engage the imagination of the reader through subtle suggestions, to present his peculiar brand of horror. Even while attempting a cursory perusal of the text, the readers simply cannot help noticing the astute way in which Henry James subscribes to a rang e of narrative devices to facilitate a disturbing as well as fabulous rendition of the psychic elements within the story. As per Jeffery Williams, â€Å"The frame of the Turn of the Screw figures a different scene, the conditions not as fatally serious, but nonetheless as urgent, coding the story primarily in terms of entertainment and an overwhelming curiosity (Williams 112).† It goes without saying that the events and actions within the narrative are so arranged to cull out the desired emotive response on the part of the readers, without leaving any scope for the superfluous and the gross. For instance the governess’ narrative begins with the observation that, â€Å"I remember the whole beginning as a succession of flights and drops, a little seesaw of the right throbs and the wrong (James 12).† These lines bring in an element of expectation within the narrative without resorting to abject horror and intimidation on the part of the writer. Such astute comments on the part of the governess and other characters do command a weight in the sense that they present the way characters react and act, in the meantime bringing forth their moral and dispositional traits. As it gets very evident from the given line, the element of horror is introduced slowly but steadily in the narrative to titillate the senses of the readers, without resorting to any abject presentation of the blood curdling horror. The writers presents the governess’ first encounter with the absurd as, â€Å"That was exactly present to me- by which I mean the face was- when, on the first of these occasions, at the end of a long June day, I stopped short on emerging from one of the plantations and coming into view of the house (James 26).† With the direct encounter of the governess with the imminent horror as expressed in this line, the plot in the novella gets dense to arouse the expectations of the readers as to the future course of action within the story and the e ventual turn that the narrative will take. The way the characters in the story are presented, as in the case of Flora, â€Å"She expressed in her little way an extraordinary detachment from the disagreeable duties, looking to me, however, with a great childish light that seemed to offer it as a mere result of the affection she has conceived for my person... (James 20)†, make the readers readily strike a bond with the characters and they simply cannot help being concerned about as to what will eventually happen to them. This

Airport screening Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Airport screening - Essay Example In his book, Airport and Aviation Security Elias2 (21) states that mandatory screening in airports is among the strategies that the DHS is employing to prevent terrorists from gaining entry into the country. According to the policy, all passengers from abroad are subjected to thorough screening at the airports to prevent entry of explosives and illegal arms or illicit drugs into the country. The screening policy at the airport was expanded recently following an Ebola scare. This follows a growing concern among Americans of the possible spread of the Ebola into the United States. In the news article â€Å"Ebola Airport Screenings May Seem Intrusive, But They’re Legal, Experts Say†, Tucker (6) notes that Ebola, a disease that was first reported in West Africa, has already claimed the lives of close to 2,000 people. Among the West African countries where deaths have been reported include Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. Ebola has also been reported in Spain and the U.S., where the disease recently claimed the life of a patient who had been transferred from West Africa for treatment. The Ebola scare has caused a scare to Americans to the extent that the government has been forced to put stringent measures to prevent the spread of Ebola into the U.S. According to the new policy, passengers arriving from West African countries, such as Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone are required to be subjected to thorough screening for Ebola virus. A news article published by Eye Witness News stated that the screening involves checking the passengers temperatures using non-touch thermometers and other screening techniques (5). The main aim of Ebola screening at the airport is to help identify sick passengers from Ebola affected countries so that appropriate measures are taken to prevent the passengers from mixing with the rest of the American population. Any passengers found showing symptoms of Ebola are quarantined immediately in the isolation facilities

Skin cancer Essay Example for Free

Skin cancer Essay How many of you have every laid out in the sun on purpose just to get a tan?   Or better yet how many of you believe you look prettier or more handsome tan?   According to the American Cancer Society more than 1 million people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year and the numbers seem to be increasing day to day. And believe it or not skin cancer is the most common of all cancers.   Today I am going to inform you about skin cancer and how you can protect yourself from it. To begin, our skin is the largest organ of the body and it covers our internal organs and protects them from injury.   The skin also serves as a barrier between germs and our internal organs.   Our skin regulates body temperature and helps the body get rid of excess waste.   Certain cells in our skin also communicate with the brain and allow us the feel temperature, touch, and pain sensations. Some may ask, what exactly is skin cancer and why is it such a big deal now?   Well there are two basic types of skin cancer; Nonmelanoma (which is also called basal or squamous cell) skin cancer and then there is melanoma skin cancer. Most skin cancers are classified under nonmelanoma, meaning that the cells are located at the base of the outer, layer of the skin.   Basically, the skin that covers the surface of the body, not the deep tissues.   Nonmelanoma skin cancer usually develops on sun-exposed areas of the body, places like: the face, ears, necks, lips, and the backs of hands.   Depending on the type they can be fast or slow growing but rarely spreads to other parts of the body.   There is a cure for nonmelanoma skin cancer is detected and treated early. On the other hand, you have melanoma skin cancer.   Which is the more dangerous of the two; however it is also the least common.   Melanoma skin cancer tends to spread very quickly to other body parts.   However, it is almost always curable if it is detected in the early stages.   But the killer part is a lot of people do not realize that they may have melanoma skin cancer until the later stages, after it has already started affecting other organs.   Once it has reached that stage, it is virtually incurable.   People diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer that has already spread to other body parts are given on average a five year survival rate. So what puts you at risk for skin cancer?   Some high risk factors include:  · Unprotected and/or excessive exposure to Ultraviolet(uv) radiation  · Fair complexions( people with red hair, most likely)  · Occupational exposures (i.e. Construction workers, arsenic compounders, baseball players)  · Family history of skin cancer  · Multiple or atypical moles  · Severe sunburns as a child So how can you detect skin cancer? Some signs of skin cancer in the early stages may include but are not limited:  · any change on the skin, especially in the size or color of a mole or other darkly pigmented growth or spot, or a new growth  · scaliness, oozing, bleeding, or change in the appearance of a bump or nodule  · the spread of pigmentation beyond its border such as dark coloring that spreads past the edge of a mole or mark  · a change in sensation, itchiness, tenderness, or pain in a mole

Borderline Personality Disorder Explored in Girl Interrupted Essay

Girl Interrupted is a 1999 film in which Susanna, a high school senior on the verge of graduating with her class in 1967, is rushed to the Emergency Room because she consumed a whole bottle of Aspirin, followed by a bottle of Vodka. After being treated, Susanna is seen by a friend of her fathers, who is a Psychiatrist who believes that her actions were an attempt at suicide. Susanna, of course denies this, instead stating that she was making an effort to rid herself of a headache. The Psychiatrist recommends that she stay at a mental hospital named Claymore for a rest. While there, Susanna meets a number of individuals with a diverse array of disorders. One individual in particular, Lisa essentially runs the group of girls because they either fear or confide in her. As we later find out, Lisa actually displays the symptoms of the borderline personality disorder, the disorder that Susanna is believed to have (Mangold). Individuals with borderline personality must be at least 18 years old and display shakiness in all social relationships and the way they see themselves and spontaneous thoughts that must be noticeably disturbed by early adulthood. Strong, often out of the way attempts, at avoiding any type of abandonment is a key element. Should an individual with borderline personality disorder feel abandonment drawing near in their life, their thinking, behavior, and self-image will change drastically. Five of the following nine statements must apply to an individual for them to be diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. 1) Attempts to avoid abandonment, whether it be real or not, 2) unstable relationships with people that are unrealistically amplified to more, or devaluated to less, than what they... ...ess and ways of thinking. This treatment makes sure to keep the bond between the client and therapist at the center so that no boundaries are crossed, giving it a hint of the humanistic psychodynamic approach. Clients who undergo this therapy tend to be able to handle stressful life situations better and mature in their social skills. Less suicides and hospital visits are also reported with those who receive DBT (Comer). Works Cited "Borderline Personality Disorder Resource Center." Borderline Personality Disorder Resource Center. Classic Knitwear Essay

Classic Knitwear, founded in 1995, began production of a unique line of unbranded casual knit apparel. Included in their product line were such clothing as T-shirts, sport shirts, sweatshirts and other wearing apparel. Although the company saw exceptional revenues as of 2005, they still felt that they were not meeting certain criteria when it came to their gross margin. They sought to increase their gross margin, currently sitting at 18%, to that of a more comfortable number of 20%. To combat this issue, Classic Knitwear decided to team up with Guardian, a producer of odorless repellant protection against bugs, and combine their fortes into a line of clothing infused with the bug repellant technology. These new products would hopefully to rise the gross margin to the 20% they were hoping to accomplish. The non-fashion casual knitwear market consisted of products that range from casual t-shirts to even underwear. Within this industry, it can be divided into two categories, those manufacturers who brand their products with their name and those companies who choose not to brand their line of products. On the branded side of the industry, Classic competed with three major brands. These brands were JamesBrands (which accounted for $4.5 billion in revenue from sales), Flowerknit (which accounted for $1.25 billion in revenue from sales), and Greenville Corporation’s TopTops Division (which accounted for $630 million in revenue from sales). These branded labels competed on the level of private- labeled businesses. On the other side of the industry, Classic competed with one company in terms of unlabeled products. B&B Activewear were major competitors as they generated $590 million or 23.6% market share, which made them a leader in the market. Although not directly involved within this sector, Jamesbrand, Flowerknit and Greenville Corporation’s TopTops Division still were involved with Classic on this level. Distribution channels are essential when it comes to the wholesales of these companies products. 90% of the product distribution from these companies go directly to two distinct types of retailers. Almost 50% of these sales are accounted for from mixed retailers, such as Wal-Mart and Kohls, who sell clothing as well as wide variety of other products. The other 40% is sold towards clothing specialist retailers, such as Gap and Brooks Brothers, who only specialize in the selling of clothing related products. The remaining 10% of the distribution channels contained bits from non- grocery retailers, home shopping, internet retailing and direct selling to the customers. In order for manufacturers to compete for retail business, they used a variety of strategies in order to gain attention from these retailers. Some of these tactics involved prices, variety of products, and efficiency of delivery. Classic Knitwear, since its inception, has been a simple manufacturing company whose focus is on creating and distributing unbranded casual knit apparel which includes T-shirts, sweatshirts and fleece like products. Unlike other companies that chose to have expensive products which carried prestigious fashion labels, Classic decided to venture away from them and focus on products that were categorized as non- fashioned knitwear. With this strategy, Classic accounted for $550 million in revenues from domestic sales. They have also decided to sell only in the United States, as foreign markets were too much of a risk that could have negative consequences. 75% of this revenue came from the selling of their products to wholesalers, who in turn, resold the Classic clothing to screen- print channels which customized the products with logos and images. Ortiz and Chong decided to concentrate on this pathway because it offered the fastest growth potential than trying to sell like ordinary retailers. As a result, Classic Knitwear had established itself as the #2 seller in the market, accounting for 16.5% of the market share. Classic generated the remaining 25% of their revenues from mass retail channels under private labeling. Classic would sell their products to retailers such as Wal-Mart and Dollar General and would be carried under the name of the retailer or through a house brand that was developed by the retailers themselves. In fact, these two retailers accounted for 57% of those revenue sales. To help accomplish such high revenues, Classic had to achieve low production costs throughout the entire company. To ensure that such goals were obtainable, Classic established state-of-the-art production factories that were situated off shore, mainly in the Dominican Republic. Being situated not in the United States allowed them to have much lower production costs than those produced domestically. Although other companies had also set up production factories in other countries, Classic was able to have a slight competitive advantage over these other companies. What helped them keep this competitive advantage was a high volume- low SKU (stock keeping unit) strategy. This ensured that they would produce high quantities of products without the large variety of products that other companies had. As of 2005, Classic felt that it would never reach their goal of 20% gross margins through various controlled labels or tie in promotions. However, Classic Knitwear had an epiphany which could potentially shoot their gross profits to levels that they would feel satisfied with. With the rise of the West Nile virus across the Americas, more and more people were looking for ways to prevent the transmission of the diseases. Classic thought it would generate the attention of customers to produce a new line of clothing that would be infused with chemicals that would be able to repel insects that carried the West Nile virus. With the help of another company, Guardian, who specialized in insect repellants, they would be able to create such a line of products. The reason that they chose Guardian was due to their flagship repellant, have established them as one of the top producers in insect repellant. The products would consist of a short and long sleeve T-shirt, a Men’s polo, and a Men’s fleece. Along with the production of these chemical infused clothing, Classic was targeting males 18-35, seeing as these individuals would most likely be outside during times when insects are active. The initial investment of such a line could cost about $10 million, which would help to generate 50% unaided awareness across the United States. In order to get the needed awareness of their product out to the public to ensure increased gross margins, Classic relied heavily on marketing. They had studied how other brands that were selling similar brands of insect repellant clothing and how they were successful, establishing themselves into small niche markets. Based on those already established companies, Classic decided to sell their product lines to retail stores with cardboard displays housing the different styles of shirts. On the outside of each of the boxes would display pictures of outdoor related activities that would promote the proper use of each shirt. Some of these retail stores would be outdoor related stores such as Bass Pro Shops and L.L. Bean. Classic wanted to have 10,000 displays in stores over the next 2 years after the product line was to begin production. To help get these displays in stores, they offered discounts on the sale of T-shirts if the store agreed to have a display in their store. Classic, with the production of these chemical infused shirts, could have a possible juggernaut to help generate sales, but there could be other possibilities that could help them reach their target gross margin of 20%. One alternative would be to not produce the new line of shirts, relying on frequent customers to help generate the extra sales to gain the extra gross margin. Another possibility would be to vertical integrate with one of the screen-pressing companies that create the logos which are later screened onto the sold shirts. By integrating, they could possibly cut unnecessary costs that would also help create higher gross margins. Lastly, another possible alternative to this problem would be to establish a brand of clothing that is positioned near the high labeled brands. They would have to compete with the big three companies with sales, but could possibly steal sales away from them to help establish themselves. Classic Knitwear was set with a problem of what to do to try and earn more in their gross profits. To solve such case, it would be recommended that they continue with the production of these insect repellant shirts. With the outbreak of the West Nile virus and outdoorsmen wanting styled brands to wear, this idea would help to generate the sales need to raise the gross profits. Based on Consumer.com surveys, it was concluded that there was a strong desire for such a product, especially one whose clothing was made out Classic’s materials. In the end, the continuation of this line would help generate the extra gross margin they had hope to gain.

Discussion The ancient Sumerian society, kings were highly placed people and they represented the will of gods. In Uruk which was the city located among the river Tigris and Euphrates, Gilgamesh was their fifth king and he is portrayed as possessing divine privileges and also responsibility as the king. The king was a revered person and often seen as a god and because they possessed divine privileges, they could sleep with their bride before the husband was permitted to do so. They also had slept with the virgins as they were accorded this right as the kings, and also due to their higher status as the god and also the old-birthright granted to them. Thirdly, kings were able to enforce the harsh work mandate uncensored. Kings also were granted human responsibilities as the ruler of the people. It was their duty to build and maintain the city. In most of the political meeting, the King’s Counsel was highly valued by the council of elders and the king was not subjected to the senate. For instance, there is an illustration when Gilgamesh talks about ‘the wise of the Uruk’. Conclusion We can conclude and say that the roles of a king was a divine one, it exhibited the significance placed to the religions and gods by the Sumerian people. Despite the fact that Gilgamesh was trusted to be a custodian of the will of the people, there was much exploits of the citizens by the king. The code of law for Hammurabi As far as the social structure Babylonians is concerned, they were governed by code of laws. These were a group of Semites who majorly communicated in Hammurabi dialect. The code of law was authored by Marduk their god. Under this code, men were granted powers over their families. In severe instances, men were given rights to sell their wives and also the children to such activities such as slavery in order to pay off their debt. Secondly, they had power to disinherit their son if they wished to do so. But for them to carry out these extreme cases, the laws provided that they have to prove their cases in a court of law so that they can be granted a go-ahead. The law never protected women and children enough. For instance, a son could have his hands cut off if he ever struck his father. When a child did a wrong once under the code, she or he was not punished but in the instance that the child made a second error, the code provided that the father was able to punish her or him as he wi shed. It can be drawn that the father was the center of the Babylonians life as the code gave them extensive powers over their families as far as the social structure was concerned. Features of pre-historic phase According to the pre-history notes, the term pre-history basically refers to ‘the time before civilization or the history itself’ which is in other word the period before the emergence of cities, before writing at around 3000 BCE just before the growth and development of ancient cities such as Mesopotamia. Let us examine some of the characteristic that were predominant in this time. Scientist such as Mary Leakey can be credited with working to provide the missing link concerning the evolution of human being from a certain period to another. One of the feature in this period was the domestication of specific animals and development of agriculture. This were what led to the growth of cities in the later stages as people were concentrated on similar locations. The author states that this was the ‘the transition from the Paleolithic to the Neolithicthat did not happen all at onceand that transition was traditionally dated as 3000 BCE.’ Secondly, in the Paleolithic duration, the discovery made by scientist in the caves of Gobekli in Turkey have shown the early man was very religious. In this site, they were able to discover religious shrines where the ancient man used to worship their gods. This has indicated ‘would push back the dating of how early mankind was engaged in any kind of formal, ritualistic religious observations.’ Also these co mmunity used to get their food majorly from being hunters and gatherers and lived in caves and trees. In this stage, man was just but an advanced ape that was bi-pedal and upright. The presence of an opposable thumbs was key for them being able to grasp and also manipulate things in a better way. Thirdly, his brain size has greatly increased making them to start coming up with new innovations so as to make their life better such as the discovery of fire. It can be concluded that man has come from a long way to the modern day human being.
